Dried Australian Mango: A sustainable solution for agricultural product consumption during the price drop season

In the middle of the harvest season, fresh Australian mangoes are stagnant, with prices dropping to just a few thousand VND per kilo, causing farmers to struggle. In this context, dried Australian mangoes have become a sustainable “salvation”, both extending the preservation time and increasing the value of agricultural products many times over.

Modern drying technology not only preserves the color and fresh flavor but also creates convenient products, meeting the needs of snacking and exporting. Let’s discover why dried Australian mango is the ideal solution to solve the problem of falling crop prices.

Current situation of Australian mango prices and difficulties in consuming fresh agricultural products

In 2025, Australian mango farmers in Cam Lam district, Khanh Hoa province are facing a difficult season when mango prices have dropped to an unprecedented low. While in previous years, grade 1 Australian mangoes were purchased at a price of 30,000 to 40,000 VND/kg, now the price is only 1,000 to 5,000 VND/kg, depending on the type . This makes many farmers reluctant to harvest, leading to a situation where ripe mangoes fall all over the ground.

The main reason for this situation is that traditional export markets, especially China, are harvesting mangoes at the same time, leading to oversupply and a sharp drop in prices. In addition, unfavorable weather this year has also affected the quality and yield of mangoes, causing the proportion of grade 1 mangoes to decrease significantly.

Faced with this situation, many farmers have had to “hang up” their gardens and not harvest because the labor and transportation costs cannot be offset by the current selling price. Many households have invested hundreds of millions of dong in mango gardens but now only hope to recover a portion of their investment.

To help farmers overcome difficulties, local authorities have recommended that businesses, supermarkets and retail systems support the consumption of Australian Cam Lam mangoes. At the same time, they have encouraged a shift to processing mango products such as dried mangoes and juices to increase value and expand the consumption market.

Dried Australian Mango – Solution to increase agricultural product value

To escape the vicious cycle of “good harvest, low price”, the trend of shifting to deep processing, especially soft drying , has been opening a real way out for Vietnamese agricultural products.

Dried Australian mango is not only a form of preservation, but also a process of upgrading the value of raw materials. Instead of being forced to sell fresh, each slice of mango is dried soft, retaining its natural bright yellow color, attractive elasticity and rich flavor, and can be sold for 120,000 – 180,000 VND/kg, which is dozens of times higher than the current price of fresh mango.

Not only that, dried mango products also have a shelf life of up to 6-12 months, are easy to transport, package and distribute widely to retail channels, supermarkets or export. This is a core factor that helps stabilize agricultural output, reduce seasonal pressure and bring sustainable income to farmers.

In fact, many cooperatives and production households in the southern provinces have tested the Australian mango drying model and recorded profits 3-5 times higher than selling fresh fruit. In particular, thanks to the application of advanced freeze-drying or convection drying technology, the quality of the finished product is guaranteed to be consistent, preserving almost all the nutrients and flavor of fresh mango.

It can be said that dried Australian mango not only solves the problem of immediate price drops, but also serves as a foundation for building a long-term agricultural value chain, helping growers be more proactive in production, preservation and access to high-end markets. This is the inevitable direction in the trend of modern and sustainable agricultural development.

Modern freeze-drying technology – The key factor in creating quality

To create golden, soft, chewy dried Australian mango slices that retain their characteristic flavor and can be preserved for a long time without preservatives, technology plays an extremely important role. In particular, freeze-drying is considered a breakthrough, a key factor in product quality.

Unlike the traditional heat drying method – which evaporates water at high temperatures and can easily cause mangoes to turn brown, dry out or lose color – freeze drying uses low temperatures (around 20–50°C) combined with a dehumidification system and continuous air circulation. Thanks to that, each piece of mango retains its natural elasticity, bright yellow color, rich aroma and characteristic sweet and sour taste, almost indistinguishable from fresh mangoes.

In particular, freeze-drying also helps to retain the maximum amount of vitamins and nutrients in mangoes, meeting the increasing demand of consumers for clean, safe and highly nutritious food.

Not only superior quality, freeze-drying technology also brings long-term economic efficiency:

  • Reduce the rate of loss of finished products due to spoilage

  • Ensure export standards to demanding markets such as Japan and EU

  • Flexible in operation: from small household scale to large scale processing plant

Many models have successfully applied SUNSAY freeze dryers, with flexible capacity from 10kg to 500kg/batch, giving uniform drying results, saving energy and being environmentally friendly. This is not only a technical solution, but also a lever to help farmers and cooperatives transform their production models towards added value and sustainable development.

Economic efficiency from the dried Australian mango model

Investing in processing dried Australian mangoes brings many outstanding economic benefits, especially in the context of the dramatic drop in fresh mango prices in 2025. Specifically:

  • Take advantage of cheap raw materials: Australian mangoes, grade 2 and grade 3, cost only 1,000 – 5,000 VND/kg, very suitable for preliminary processing and drying instead of throwing away or selling at a loss.

  • Increase output value 3-5 times: From 1 ton of fresh mango (~3 million VND for raw materials), about 150 – 180 kg of dried mango can be obtained. With an average selling price of 120,000 – 150,000 VND/kg, revenue reaches about 18 – 27 million VND/batch.

  • Attractive profit: After deducting electricity, labor, packaging and loss costs (about 30-40%), net profit can reach 10-15 million VND/batch, depending on scale and level of operational optimization.

  • Reducing crop loss: Ripe mangoes that do not meet fresh selling standards can be processed, reducing waste and increasing raw material efficiency.

  • Easy to preserve and distribute: Dried mango can be preserved for 6 – 12 months, does not require cold storage, is easy to package, easy to transport and distribute through many channels: supermarkets, agricultural stores, online sales…

  • Creating local jobs: Households and cooperatives can build small- and medium-sized processing models locally, contributing to solving seasonal labor problems.

  • Natural color: Does not darken or turn brown like high temperature drying.

  • Original flavor: No burnt edges or loss of flavor due to excessive heat.

  • Optimal nutritional content: Retains vitamin C, antioxidants and natural enzymes.

  • Attractive softness: Creates a delicious feeling, suitable for modern consumer taste.
